Common Questions and More Information

  • The Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification is an international standard in the guiding and outdoor education industry. Typically taught as 80 hours of curriculum, this course prepares outdoor leaders and professionals to respond to, assess, and manage accidents in an environment that lacks access to primary care medicine.

  • If you work or recreate in the outdoors or in other austere environments where access to medical care is delayed or communication is unreliable, acquiring your WFR certification is extremely recommended.

Whether you are a professional guide, trip leader, search and rescue team member, or international traveler, this course is for you.

    The WFR is ideal for:

    • Professional guides and outfitters seeking the credential employers require

    • Search and rescue team members who respond to backcountry emergencies

    • Outdoor educators and trip leaders responsible for group safety in remote settings

    • Expedition members traveling to areas with limited medical access

    • Serious backcountry travelers who want comprehensive emergency response skills

  • Three weeks before the course you will gain access to an online learning environment using the Canvas Platform.

Prior to Day 1, we ask that you complete the online platform. Users report the platform taking between 20-40 hours to complete depending on your speed and thoroughness.

During the in-person learning days we will focus on reviewing information from your online learning, supplementing that knowledge, and putting it into practice in scenario based mock-rescues. This scenario based learning solidifies knowledge and begins the development of judgment.

All education online and in the classroom will be in English.

  • This course is being hosted collaboratively between Mapping Croatia and World Travel Project. The curriculum, content, and certification comes from NOLS, an American company that is the largest provider of Wilderness Medicine Education in the world.

The WFR curriculum is certified by the Wilderness Medicine Educational Collective and meets the standards for certification.

  • Yes! We are also offering a 2-day Wilderness First Aid course. You can find information about that here.
